There is a rash of both left and right-wing Presidents worldwide being convicted for corruption: Looks like both the last two Presidents of South Korea are going down, Lula has been convicted, Zuma has been convicted, etc., etc., etc.
My guessing would be it's not just that ideologies are corruptable from both directions, but also that it's the system called "politics" itself. Like... in the long term, you don't get around this dirty business. Or you're getting nowhere with what policies. Sad to say, but it seems like in this world you're getting nowhere with honesty and trying to play fair...
My impression from reading about Park Geun-hye is that the south korean populace assumes the president is going to be quite corrupt, and the only questions are how it's discovered and the precise nature of it. I think that's still a novelty for the US; we are less willing to acknowledge it as a possibility.
